One Trimester Down, Two To Go

indexYay!!! We made it through the first trimester and so far, so good. My baby is a trooper. Six months left to go. B is still having the occasional bout with nausea but I can tell that it is definitely happening less these days. Here’s to her slowly regaining her appetite for my cooking!
Its time to start telling people. I have a sneaking feeling that I’m going to be one of those proud fathers with 100’s of baby photos in my wallet, not to mention gigabytes of videos on my phone. Its crazy, I feel like shouting at the top of my lungs – I’ve held my jubilation bottled up for so long I don’t know what to do with myself. Maybe I’ll rent out one of those skywriting planes and write “My baby is on the way” in letters a mile high! Maybe not. I better save my $$ for diapers – from what I hear baby can already use them (see below.) So in lieu of smoke emitting aircraft … I’ll have to settle for Facebook and Twitter. I think its safe now to start sharing RookiePops with my friends and family …

Considering the size of my family, I should put ads on this site first ;-)

Now for how my baby’s doing:
This week’s big developments: My baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process that I tease my wife about and a process that he’ll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and hopefully at our next ultrasound we catch him sucking his thumb.

In other news:

He’s stretching out. From head to bottom, he already measures about 3 1/2 inches (roughly the size of a lemon) and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body’s growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that’s in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He’s starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Remind me to mock my baby when he grows up about his fur. My baby’s liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it’s doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. B can’t feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, but apparently our little pugilist’s hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.

Yes … I know … I’ve been saying “he” this week, but the truth is we don’t know yet whether he is a he or a she. Which brings me to my next point, we don’t know yet whether we want to know the sex of the baby or whether we want to be surprised.

And by we, of course I mean she. I have always wanted to know and have been very clear about that… (check my blog ;) I’m a big proponent of taking full advantage of all that technology has to offer us. There are enough surprises in life, imho we should find out because we can find out. But B, on the hand, was certain she wanted to be surprised up until a week ago now she’s on the fence … you’ll be the first to know how this one shakes out.

I believe it’s going to be a boy. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

B, need a little push over the fence? Think about all of the things you can do ahead of time by knowing. Isn’t waiting like procrastinating? I thought that was a pet peeve………

    Hog,

Man ol man what can I say first off: Child creation is a true blessing from God. Take advantage of each moment they will be short but precious!

well you know I’ve been pulling for a boy. I want to be able to teach my lil’ nephew how to play soccer, ride bikes, and drive cars; and to be there to advise him on relationships, life, etc…. but I guess I can do the same thing if he’s a she,. just have to approach the whole ‘dating’ topic a bit differently later down the line….. hmmmm
already getting a bit nervous…. well, at least I’m not the rookie pop ;)

Nothing a shotgun can’t solve. In one scenario we take the boy out shooting, in the other we’re the one’s doing the shooting (until she’s @least 21)

Love your blog and look forward to reading many more. Is B going to start her own blog or add to yours? Many hugs and much love to both of you. HAGOS!!!!!!

Little Hagos! What exciting news, and I love that you are blogging about it. It’s so much fun that we are going through this new-parenting thing in more or less the same time frame. The pregnancy is so exciting, especially when you are following the developments as closely as you are. Can’t wait to read more, andbig big hugs to you and B!!!

    Hgwish,

What a wonderful piece of news this is. Enjoy every moment and make sure you keep the mother to be very happy eventhough some of the demands in the coming months may sound out of this earth. Just take it as it comes and the experience is something to be had. Don’t forget to be the A student that you are at the Lamas classes.

One more thing cuz. Do not spoil the natural surprise by interjecting technology. We waited until the last second to find out their genders. Believe me, it is worth it. For me, it was a relief when my last one (Lillian) was a girl. I would use technology to help me find a name.

I am excited for both of you. I will have to get used to the thought that your parents will be grand parents soon.

    Congrats.

Hugs and kisses to H and B.
